It's time for Shetland to be heard

Sustainable Shetladn SIC petition launch 18 Nov. 2008For too long Viking Energy, and Shetland Islands Council (SIC) have claimed that if the people of Shetland don't want the Viking Project to go ahead, it will not. Meanwhile they have continued to press for planning consent. This is not good enough. Our petition will give people the opportunity to tell SIC councilors what is obvious to the majority of people in Shetland. We do not want the Viking Energy project. We want councillors NOT to back this project.

This will be a paper petition, it is addressed to SIC councillors, and states:

SAY "NO!" TO VIKING ENERGY

  • We the undersigned oppose plans for the Viking Energy wind farm development.

  • We support renewable energy projects in Shetland, which are fit for scale and fit for purpose.

  • We call upon local councillors not to support any large-scale wind farm planning application.

We need as many people in Shetland as possible to sign this petition. It's a paper petition, and each sheet is numbered and logged out to a local coordinator, so that we can track every sheet out, and chase every sheet back! We need you to sign, but just the once thanks. All sheets will be checked for duplicate names. The reason for numbering is to avoid petitions being signed, then lost before they are returned to us. Every signature is valuable.

We also have a network of volunteers throughout Shetland coordinating petitions in their own local area, and over the next few days they will be making petitions available in local shops etc.

Over the next few days we hope to list all the places with petition sheets. Petition locations here.

In the meantime, if you would like to help collect signatures in your area, or need to know the nearest location of the petition, contact our petition coordinator, Joy Tait. Joy can be contacted on 01595 809 789, or via the email form here.
